Grass Fires Extinguished Along Tracks Throughout Geneva

The Geneva Fire Department says brush fires ignited along the train tracks from Old Kirk Road to Peck Road on Tuesday afternoon. Sparks from a train are the suspected cause.

The issued a press release Tuesday night explaining a rash of grass and brush fires along the train tracks in Geneva, from Peck Road on the west to Old Kirk Road on the east.

The department responded at 12:22 p.m. Tuesday after receiving multiple reports of grass fires.

"It is suspected that a malfunctioning rail car possibly threw sparks, which ignited the fire," the press release said.

Commuter and freight trains were stopped in both directions for about an hour, while firefighters from Geneva, and St. Charles extinguished the fires—all of which were put out by 2:26 p.m.

There were no injuries or property damage as a result of the fires, the press release said.
