Crime & Safety

Some Familiar Names and Places in Geneva Traffic Reports

Police reports: Everyone gets into a dinger now and then. So it's not unusual to see names of folks you know. Or accidents in places you've driven. Probably, that's one of the reasons the police blotter runs in every local news source.

The police blotter is always one of the items that gets the most traffic (pardon the pun)—whether it's in the newspaper or on the "online newspaper." For as long as I've been in local journalism, that's been the case.

I admit, police blotter isn't the first thing I look at, and in fact, I rarely look at it at all. I'm just not wired like that as a reader. I'm a "scanner"mostly. Whatever headline grabs my attention is the one I go for—in print or online.

I suspect that the reason blotter items are so often read is that people want to know what their neighbors are up to. Obviously, too, crime and safety are always at the top of residents' priority list. You want to know if there's a rash of mailbox damage in your part of town, or GPS's stolen.
