UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Effect Until 10 PM Wednesday; Flash Flood Warning Added

7:07 p.m.—The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Kane County and the surrounding area. There's a flood warning now, too.

At 7:07 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service has changed its Severe Thunderstorm Warning to a "Watch" for Kane County and the surrounding area.

The watch is in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Kane County is now in a Flash Flood Warning until 9 p.m. Wednesday, as well.

"AT 603 PM CDT ... WEATHER SPOTTERS REPORTED THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE WARNED AREA. DOPPLER RADAR ESTIMATES THAT 3 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST KANE ... EASTERN MCHENRY AND NORTHWEST LAKE COUNTIES BETWEEN 330 PM CDT AND 6 PM CDT," the Flood Warning says.

"BUT NEW STORMS MAY DEVELOP INTO THE FLASH FLOOD AREA LATER THIS EVENING ... RUNOFF FROM THIS EXCESSIVE RAINFALL WILL CAUSE FLASH FLOODING TO OCCUR."

Scanner reports mentioned hail the size of quarters in Northern Kane County, near Randall Road and Route 20 earlier in the evening.

We were disappointed because we were promised hail the size of half dollars. But we're happy the damage is less.

Until 7 p.m., we were under a Severe Weather Warning.

Just for posterity and the fun of it, here is some of what we posted earlier:

"SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ... SOME MAY PRODUCE: LARGE HAIL UP TO THE SIZE OF HALF DOLLARS.

"LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. HEAVY RAIN AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING.

"AREAS AFFECTED AND TIMING: THUNDERSTORM CHANCES WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AND LINGER INTO THE EVENING HOURS."

The warning (and now the watch) is for all of Northern Illinois and—in addition to Kane County—includes Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, DuPage, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy (heh heh), Will, Kankakee, Livingston, Iorquois, Ford, Lake (IN), Porter, Newton, Jasper and Benton.

"THESE STORMS WILL BE FUELED BY THE UNSEASONABLY WARM AND MOIST AIRMASS ...WHICH WHEN COMBINED WITH A JET STREAM ALOFT ... COULD ALLOW SOME OF THE STORMS TO BECOME SEVERE."

It's still dangerous out there, so keep your eyes open.
