Report: Black's Auto Rebuilders Says Fire Might Have Been Arson

The owner of Black's Auto Rebuilders says he believes the Wednesday-morning fire might have been set off by an explosive device pushed through the body shop's drop box.

But the owner of the body shop says he thinks the fire might have been caused by an explosive device pushed through the drop box where customers leave their keys.

Bob Black told the Kane County Chronicle's Brenda Schory that he was doing some bookkeeping in the early morning hours when he heard a "bang like a gunshot blast" before the fire started.

Firefighters responded at 5:14 a.m. to the fire at Black's, located at 802 E. State St., about a block from the fire station. The fire was located in the shop area "and involved storage containers and one of the vehicles undergoing repairs," the Fire Department's press release said.

Smoke and flames were visible through windows in the building when firefighters arrived. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no one was hurt.

The Chronicle story estimates the damages at $10,000.

Black did not immediately report his suspicions to the Geneva Police Department, according to the Chronicle story, because he was waiting for a special investigator from his insurance company to help identify the cause.
