Race-Related Graffiti Painted on Geneva Park Bleachers

Police reports: "Hispanics," "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" painted on bleacher rows at baseball field.

The official crime category is "criminal damage to state-supported land," but the graffiti painted on some Geneva park bleachers is a crime of more emotional impact.

Someone spray-painted race-related words on the bleachers in the baseball field of Don Forni Park, 3338 Border Road, Geneva, reports said.

Whether it was a juvenile attempt at social commentary or plain old bigotry isn't known, and probably won't be, but there's no place for that kind of graffiti here or anywhere else. And that's my social commentary of the day.

The bleachers are located near the first-base and third-base dugout benches, and the incident happened sometime prior to 9:46 am. Sept. 7, when police responded.

The person or persons painted “Hispanics” and “Coolest Parent” on the top row, “Whites Only” on the middle row and “Colored Only” on the bottom row of seats of the first-base-side benches.

Other epithets and symbols were written on the third-base-side benches. Police contacted the Geneva Park District, and employees said the graffiti would be removed.
