Police: Two Cars Stolen From Rio Vista Homes

Police say thefts are similar to those from "upscale neighborhoods" across the northeast

Two luxury vehicles were stolen from outside homes in the Rio Vista complex Thursday night, Police Chief James Batelli said.

A 2011 Mercedes Benz E35 was stolen from a driveway on Gregorian Court and a 2009 Acura MDX was taken from a home on Emma Court, Batelli said.

The cars were stolen sometime between 11 p.m. Thursday evening and 7:50 a.m. Friday morning, police said.

Both cars “had the keys either in the ignition or under the seat,” he said.

On Gregorian Court, the thieves first tried to steal a different vehicle that was parked behind the Mercedes, but could not locate the key. The Mercedes was then driven across the front lawn to maneuver it off of the property, police said.

Batelli said similar thefts are becoming an increasing problem across “upscale” neighborhoods the northeast, and almost always involve a car that has a key in it.

Car thieves “look for a key left in the ignition, in the visor, under the seat, or in several instances have used the valet key, which is kept in the glove compartment or owner’s manual,” he said.

According to Batelli, police believe the stolen vehicles are taken to “ocean containers” to be shipped overseas, “where registration procedures are not as stringent as in the United States.”

Residents are reminded by the Mahwah Police Department to lock their vehicles and remove all keys from cars at night.

Stupid is as stupid gets!!! Why in this day & age would anyone leave a key anywhere let alone in the ignition or under a mat or a valet key with the owners manual are you kidding what do you do for a living that you deserve to live where you do and be that stupid & ignorant! You who are all arguing about small business owners, hedge fund workers , etc etc if you are that stupid to leave car keys easily accesible to car thieves you certainly do not belong living in Rio Vista cause you are either moronic or idiotic or just plain stupid

Maryann, I agree that leaving the keys in the car was extremely dumb, I just couldn't believe someone would say they deserved it just because the person was well off. No one should wish such an awful thing to happen to someone they don't know

Maybe they're not stupid. Maybe they're just so arrogant that they couldn't possibly conceive the thought that this could happen to them. They've gotten accustomed to their charmed lives and probably feel these things don't happen to "people like us who live in neighborhoods like us". I had the pleaasure of dealing with this type. When their kids were running all over the dealership like wild animals (why should they be scolded), they inevitably knocked hot chocolate on 300 stuffed envelopes. When one of them offered an apology, he was scolded for doing so because in the mother's words "they have people like them to wait on people like us". Yes folks, you read that right.... I was and still am confounded.

Just cause you have some shitty low-end job with no prospects for improvement doesn't mean you should hate people just because they are more successful than you. Jealousy and anger will get you nowhere. BTW, I would love to know why people who work harder and more hours deserve to be taxed more. If you wanted it to be fair, there should be a FLAT tax and privatize social security so people actually get out of the system what they put in and all the freeloaders will actually have to work.
