Police: St. Charles Woman Faces Charges After Barricading Herself Inside Apartment with Empty Shotgun

The 49-year-old remains hospitalized after weekend standoff.

Charges are pending for a 49-year-old woman who barricaded herself inside her St. Charles apartment and had a standoff with police Sept. 2.

The woman, who  spokesman Paul McCurtain declined to identify except for her age, remains hospitalized.

At 5:22 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a call of a possibly suicidal person into an apartment in the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive.

Officers spoke with the woman’s husband, who said she was cutting herself and had refused to come out of an upstairs bedroom. The husband also told police that there was an “inoperable” shotgun in the bedroom.

At one point, she came to the window holding the shotgun, according to police. When she reportedly ignored orders from police to put down the gun and come out, police fired pepper-spray projectiles into the bedroom.

Shortly thereafter, the woman came out of the bedroom holding the shotgun. When she reportedly ignored further request to put down the gun, police used a stun gun in subdue her and placed her under arrest.

Officers later found that shotgun was empty and had a lock on the trigger.

The woman was taken to Delnor Hospital for treatment but has since taken to a second unidentified hospital, according to police. Charges are expected when she is released.
