Police Investigate 'Murder-Suicide Attempt' on Route 31, Woman Found Stabbed to Death in Apartment

The woman had a romantic relationship with the man suspected in her death, who died after jumping out of a third-story window, police said. Here are the details.

A 50-year-old woman was found dead Monday night in an apartment on Route 31, and the man suspected to be responsible for her death took his own life by jumping out of a window, police said.

Police found Tomi Vandiver, of the 300 block of South Lincolnway (Route 31) in North Aurora, unresponsive in the 58-year-old man's apartment. She lived in the same building as the man. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to North Aurora police.

Officers were dispatched at 8:51 p.m. Monday to Eden Supportive Living, 311 S. Lincolnway, for a suicidal resident who was threatening to jump from his third-floor window, police confirmed. On-site security at the building identified the resident as a 58-year-old man.

He died late Tuesday afternoon, police said. The man's identity has not yet been released.

"The 58-year-old male is considered the suspect in Vandiver’s death," police said in a statement.

Vandiver had a romantic relationship with the 58-year-old man, according to an initial investigation. She went to his apartment to gather some of her things early in the evening before she planned to meet a different man, who lived in the same building as her and the 58-year-old. She never showed up to meet the other man.

Eden Supportive Living is an apartment complex for people with physical disabilities ages 22 to 64, according to its website. Eden provides a lesser level of care than a nursing home and encourages social interaction and independence.

Eden also has a location in the Buena Park neighborhood on Chicago's north side.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office took custody of Vandiver’s body and planned to conduct an autopsy Tuesday.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force assisted North Aurora Police with crime-scene processing.

This case remains under investigation by the North Aurora Police Department.
