Police Blotter: The Curious Case of Theft From a Locked Trunk

Geneva police reports: Someone steals inventory equipment from a locked trunk. There are no signs of break-in and the interior-cab latch does not work.

On such premises novels are sometimes built.

This one is the curious case of the inventory equipment stolen from inside a locked trunk, combining the mystery of how the break-in occurred as well as the challenge of unraveling the motive for stealing inventory-specific electronics.

Here are the facts, taken from the Geneva Police Department blotter.

Theft from Locked Trunk—An employee of RGIS Inventory Specialists told police that someone took several electronic inventorying tools from the locked trunk of her Chrysler convertible sometime between 1:15 a.m. and 5:25 p.m. Sept. 20, Geneva police reports said.

The victim said she loaded the items—a wireless transmitter, battery charging station, batteries, printer, four RM machines and three finger-laser scanners—into the trunk prior to leaving the Aurora Outlet Mall, 1650 Premium Outlet Boulevard, Aurora, at around 1:15 a.m.

She then drove to Rue 21, at 1524 South Randall Road, where she stayed for a time and left at 2:45 a.m. for her residence. After a few hours' sleep, she went to two other residences during the day and arrived back at the Aurora Outlet Mall around 5:25 p.m.

The victim told police she did not leave the trunk open at any point and that the trunk release on the interior of the car was broken. She told police that the only way to get into the trunk was by using a key or "picking the lock."

The value of the items taken was not known at the time the report was filed.

I believe magic was used in this case.
