Monday Wind Chills Called 'Deadly'

We've already recorded a record low temperature. Return to this article for updates during the day.

The National Weather Service of Chicago is calling Monday's wind chills "deadly" and is advising residents to stay indoors.

The Wind Chill Warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014.

The temperature in Geneva was minus 17 degrees as of 8:44 a.m.

Vehicles are reported abandoned, and a variety of accidents and stalled vehicles are keeping Geneva police busy Monday, according to Tri-Com scanner reports.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago area hit a record low for this date when O'Hare recorded a temperature of minus 15 degrees, beating the previous low temperature of minus 14 degrees.

Here's the latest from the National Weather Service in Chicago:

THREATENING WIND CHILLS WILL OCCUR THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.

PERIOD OF 40 BELOW TO 50 BELOW ZERO THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON.
THESE FORECAST WIND CHILLS ARE THE LOWEST IN NEARLY 20 YEARS.

WITH THESE EXPECTED WIND CHILLS. DEATH WILL ALSO OCCUR IF
PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN WHEN BEING OUTSIDE.

* TEMPERATURES...LOWS 15 BELOW TO 20 BELOW ZERO TONIGHT AND
MONDAY NIGHT. RECORD COLD HIGHS OF 10 BELOW TO 15 BELOW ZERO

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS THE WIND WILL COMBINE WITH VERY COLD
AIR TO CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES. THIS WILL RESULT
IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA OR DEATH IF PRECAUTIONS ARE
NOT TAKEN. BRING PETS INDOORS.
