Laptop Taken During Home Burglary, Rental Car Stolen: Police Blotter

Downers Grove police reports, Jan. 14-17.

Residential Burglary

A home in the 4600 block of Drendel Road was burglarized sometime between 5:30 a.m. and 3:38 p.m., police said.

When the homeowner returned home from work, she discovered the front door was pried open and the master bedroom disturbed, prompting her to call 911.

When police arrived, they found several 1/4-inch pry marks on the outside of the door near the dead bolt and door knob lock, according to reports.

The offenders went through drawers and jewelry boxes in several bedrooms, police said. The vehicle in the garage had its glove box open and was ransacked, according to reports. A second vehicle was untouched.

Police said a laptop was stolen during the incident. The victim said she would contact police about other missing items after she took inventory.

Stolen Rental Car

A rental car was reported stolen from Hertz, 1728 Ogden Ave., police said.

The manager told police a car was rented Nov. 9, but was not returned by its due date of Nov. 26. Two certified letters of demand were mailed to the corresponding address, but they were returned after three days, police said.

According to reports, the address on the paperwork was to a strip mall in Chicago. The firm Collateral Consultants was hired to retrieve the vehicle.

The firm told police the credit card used to rent the car was fraudulent. Police discovered the person who rented the car had stolen a woman's license number, and used a fake phone number and address.

Police Blotter information is provided by local law enforcement agencies. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions taken on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.

Hope they catch the thief! Tip for the future; get anti-theft security software like devicetrack.net installed on your laptop. It would have let you track it down yourself and have the cops get it for you. Last time I checked, the cops don't charge for property recoveries.
