Geneva Woman's Quick Action Leads to Car-Burglary Arrest at Brittany Court Apartments

The following information was supplied by the Geneva Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Geneva police arrested Tyler Winans, 24, of Geneva on charges of burglary from a motor vehicle, criminal trespass to a motor vehicle and unlawful display of license plate registration sticker around 7:45 a.m. March 20 in the parking lot in the 300 block of Brittany Court, reports said.

According to the synopsis sheet, a resident of the apartments looked out her window and saw a man—later identified as Winans—walk up to her neighbor’s vehicle and attempt to open the passenger-side door, then walk to several other vehicles and attempt to open the door, without success.

When she saw Winans approach her vehicle, she hit her vehicle’s remote to ensure the vehicle was locked. Winans quickly walked to a vehicle that was running in the parking lot and drove away. The witness described his vehicle as a black Jeep and gave police the license plate number.

Police stopped the vehicle, and when Winans exited, officers found “numerous pieces of identification lying in plain view on the passenger’s seat.” Among the items were numerous identification cards, sunglasses and an unopened flashlight.

Winans’ vehicle was towed to Duke and Lee’s Service Corp. and impounded.
