Geneva Police Charge Batavia Man, 24, With Battery Against Police Officers, Resisting Arrest

Police reports: The 24-year-old kicks at, punches police officers after police offer him a ride home.

When you read a police report like this, you often find yourself thanking your lucky stars you didn't select a career in law enforcement.

Geneva Police arrested Michael Hess, 24, of Batavia on charges of aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and attempting to disarm a police officer following an arrest for public intoxication around 10:30 p.m. May 23, reports said.

Officers responded to a call at 820 Commons Drive, Geneva, in reference to an intoxicated subject. They talked to a woman who identified Hess as her boyfriend and said he was drunk and walking on Randall Road.

When police found him, Hess said he was going to walk home, but the officers did not feel it was safe to walk on Randall—particularly in a drunken state in an area with no sidewalks—and offered him a ride. Hess became angry, so police advised him he was under arrest for public intoxication.

As officers attempted to take Hess into custody, he began resisting officers, reports said. One officer strained the rotator cuff of his right shoulder while attempting to get Hess to the ground. Hess continued to resist by refusing to walk to the squad car, and  once in the car, Hess pushed back against and kicked at officers.

Once at the Police Department, the records clerk advised that Hess was screaming. He was escorted to a holding cell “to clean himself up," but Hess resisted being handcuffed to the holding bench and had to be forced into the holding cell. There, he kept struggling and kept officers from closing the door.

While the officers tried to get the door closed, Hess punched one of the officers in the face with a closed fist. Hess began flinging blood at officers from a cut on his hand, then spit in an officer’s face, according to reports.
