'Drifts as High as a Car': Sheriff's Office Issues Warning for Drivers

"Most north south roads, especially IL Route 47 north of IL Route 64, are being affected by the high winds drifting snow over the roads."

The Kane County Sheriff's Office is asking employers to let people off work early on Monday in anticipation of a dangerous evening commute.

"As we get closer to the drive home from work motorists who need to travel in rural Kane County are encouraged to try to leave early if at all possible," Lt. Patrick Gengler said in a press release.

"Most north south roads, especially IL Route 47 north of IL Route 64, are being affected by the high winds drifting snow over the roads. Parts of Route 47 in this stretch have drifts across the southbound lane of traffic that are as high as a car.

"In the daylight it is easier to deal with the conditions but once nightfall occurs and the lack of streetlights in western Kane County travel will be more difficult.

Gengler says the drive home Monday night "is likely to be much more difficult than the drive to work."

Motorists need to make sure they have a full tank of gas, charged cell phones, layers of clothes and any other essential items they may need in the event they are stranded for an extended period of time.
