Carpentersville Man Pleads Guilty to Severely Battering Girlfirend

Tyrell Sumling punched the victim in the abdomen, rupturing her spleen, which later had to be removed. The victim remained hospitalized for a week as she recovered from her injuries.

A Carpentersville man will go to prison after he pleaded guilty to punching and severely injuring his girlfriend in June 2012.

Tyrell D. Sumling, 24, most recently of the 2000 block of Berkshire Circle, Carpentersville, on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, agreed to a sentence of five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to one count of aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony.

Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti accepted the plea.

On June 19, 2012, at a residence in East Dundee, Sumling and his longtime girlfriend, the victim, began to argue. The dispute turned violent when Sumling punched the victim in the abdomen, rupturing her spleen. The victim’s spleen was removed as a result of the rupture. The victim remained hospitalized for a week as she recovered from her injuries and from the surgery.

Sumling has been convicted of domestic battery on at least three previous occasions stemming from incidents in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

According to Illinois law, Sumling must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He was given credit for at least 448 days served in the Kane County jail, where he had been held since his arrest in lieu of $750,000 bail.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams.
