Batavia Softball Coach Ashley Szymski Resigns After DUI Charge

Ashley Szymski stepped down last week, Batavia High School's athletic director confirmed. She was with the high school girls softball team for three seasons.

Ashley Szymski has given up her position as head coach of the girls softball team, officials confirmed earlier this week.

Szymski resigned last week during the period of , said Dave Andrews, the high school's athletic director.

Szymski, 38, said that a recent DUI charge was a factor in her decision to leave, as well as the strain of teaching in Naperville and then coaching in Batavia at the same time, the Kane County Chronicle reports.

Szymski is a teacher in the English department at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville.

Szymski, of the 2300 block of Georgetown Circle in Aurora, in the 100 block of North Route 59 in Naperville, the city's police said.

In addition to driving under the influence of alcohol, Szymski was charged with the following:

  • Improper turn at an intersection
  • Operating a vehicle without insurance
  • Wrong lane usage 
  • Using unsafe tires

She was released on $300 bond.

A call placed on Tuesday afternoon to a listed phone number for Szymski rang repeatedly and no one picked up.

Szymski during her first full season with the softball team in spring 2011. During the spring 2010 season, Szymski served as an assistant before becoming interim head coach after Batavia High School teacher Leon Pedraza left the coaching position.

Neuqua Valley School officials have not contacted Szymski about the charges, according to the Chronicle's story.
