Alert: Slippery Roads Causing a Number of Early-Morning Accidents Thursday

Geneva police warn residents of slippery roads early Thursday morning. Allow extra travel time to avoid accidents.

Geneva police sent a Nixle e-blast at a little after 7 a.m. this morning (Thursday, Dec. 29) warning drivers to be wary of slippery roads.

"Please allow for extra travel time this morning as the roadways are extremely slippery," the e-blast says. "There have been numerous accidents in the area, beginning around 5 a.m. Please leave sufficient travel distance between vehicles, wear your seatbelts, limit distractions (cell phones, etc.) and again, allow extra time."

At 7:38 a.m., scanners were reporting icy conditions in the Stearns Road area, and backup on Route 25 around the area of Blackjack's north of St. Charles due to an accident.

The National Weather Service-Chicago has posted a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the Northern Illinois area.

"RAIN WILL DEVELOP TONIGHT, MAINLY AFTER MIDNIGHT. RAIN MAY MIX WITH SLEET OR WET SNOW AT TIMES.

"PRECIPITATION IS LIKELY TO CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY MORNING, MAINLY IN THE FORM OR RAIN, THOUGH THERE IS A CHANCE THAT RAIN COULD CHANGE TO WET SNOW. THERE IS A SMALL CHANCE OF SOME SLUSHY ACCUMULATIONS IN SPOTS.

"WINDS MAY GUST OVER 40 MPH SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY."
