78-Year-Old Rural Pedestrian Killed Going to Get His Mail Monday Night

The Kane County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatal car-versus-pedestrian traffic crash that occurred at 5:05 p.m. Nov. 18 on Allen Road west of Route 20.

A 78-year-old Hampshire man who had walked across Allen Road to get his mail a little after 5 p.m. Monday was hit by a car and killed in unincorporated Hampshire Township. 

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal car-versus-pedestrian traffic crash that occurred at 5:05 p.m. Nov. 18 on Allen Road west of Route 20.

The Sheriff's Office initial investigation shows that Fred Bishop, 78, of 44W600 block of Allen Road, had walked across Allen Road to get his mail and had begun to walk back across the road to his house when he was struck by a 2004 Honda Accord that was traveling east on Allen.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Nathan Day, 28, of Hampshire — the sole occupant of the Honda — was transported to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with minor injuries.

Kane County Sheriff's detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate the crash, according to a press release issued Tuesday morning.

No tickets have been issued, and detectives have not determined if drugs or 
alcohol or texting were involved in the crash.
