3 Students at Batavia High School Cited for Drug Paraphernalia

The following information was supplied by the Batavia Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Three Batavia High School students were cited for possession of drug paraphernalia March 22, Batavia police reports indicate.

Batavia school officials learned about the drug paraphernalia and contacted Batavia High School police liaison officer Chris Potthoff, who cited the students at around 12:42 p.m. at the school, 1201 Main St.

Because the students are juveniles and the incident was a first offense, the students are being cited under city ordinance rather than prosecuted in courts, Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said.

"We have an option of either referring the case to court or doing a formal station adjustment, and that's what we did in this case," Mazza said. "Rather than putting it into the court system, we come up with some agreement, usually (after meeting) with the parents and the juvenile, to do some community service and mandated (supervision,)" Mazza said.

The School District also will hand out its own disciplinary measures, Mazza said. The decision regarding a station adjustment is considered on a case-by-case basis but is not unusual for first offenses.

"It doesn’t clog the system up, and it gives kids who made a mistake a chance to get their stuff together," Mazza said.

Police reports also included a "disturbance" at the high school, recorded on the same day as the drug paraphernalia citations, but the incident actually took place on March 13 and was unrelated to the March 22 citations.

The distrubance involved four students at around 1 p.m. March 13 and "sounds like some pushing and shoving," Mazza said.

Reports do not name the students because they are juveniles.

Geneva police recently reported that a student was cited for underage drinking at the high school. Batavia police reported a similar underage drinking incident at Batavia High School in early March.
