2 Bicycles—With Locks—Stolen From Geneva Train Depot

Geneva police reports: Two bicycles locked and left at the train station are stolen at about the same time period.

Bicycles left for long periods at the train station and in danger of getting stolen—even if they're secured with a lock.

Two Geneva police reports showed bicycles were taken on or about Aug. 28. In both cases, the victims were commuters, the bicycle locks were also taken, and the bikes were left unattended for long periods of time.

Here are the reports:

Theft Under $500—Someone took a red and black men’s Hard Rock Sport bicycle with lock from outside the Geneva train depot, sometime between 5:20 p.m. Aug. 27 and 7:30 a.m. Aug. 29, Geneva police reports said. Reports said the owner generally rides the train to Geneva, then rides his bicycle from the train depot to his place of work, Altech Environmental on Kaneville Road. The bicycle was valued at $400.

Theft Over $500—Someone took a Trek brand mountain bicycle and accessories from the Geneva train depot sometime between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Aug. 28, Geneva police reports said. According to reports, the owner arrived at the depot and secured the bicycle with a lock just outside the commuter train structure on the south side of the tracks. When he returned at 5 p.m., the bicycle was missing. The bicycle was valued at $865.

Sounds like a great time for the City of Geneva to look at the bicycle rental lockers that are found in many other towns. There is plenty of room on the gravel area on the West end of the North side platform. You can charge $12-$15 a month and you already have the infrastructure setup the parking permit system. In the same area they could put permanent bicycle racks for those who chose not to rent a locker.

Chad, This sounds like a great idea for you to bring up to the Strategic Plan Advisory Committee (SPAC) and possibly the Bicycle/Pedestrian sub-committeed they have established. Here's a link for more info http://www.genevaspac.org
