In this, the 100th anniversary of the Geneva-Batavia football rivalry, all the coins are stacked on the Bulldogs' side.
Batavia is 2-0 so far in 2012 and coming off a 2011 season in which the Bulldogs went 12-1 and advanced to the state Class 6A semifinals. Geneva is 0-2 this season, handed a couple of hefty losses in a rebuilding year after bowing out in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs a year ago.
The Bulldogs won the first meeting, a 12-7 victory at Batavia in 1913. Overall, the Vikings have won 51 times to the Bulldogs' 37. There have been five ties, and the teams did not play for seven of the intervening years, according to the outstanding Batavia library website.
This year's contest is at Batavia, and the Bulldogs are prohibitive favorites. Batavia Coach Dennis Piron, himself a former Bulldog player, isn't likely to allow a letdown. We can only hope that it's not one of those blowout games mentioned on the Batavia library's record books.
Still, simply because of the storied rivalry, anything can happen. Emotions will run high.
