Death Notices: Geneva Remembers Wayne Giese, Zora Turnbaugh

Remembrances and links to the obituaries from Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles funeral homes, for the week prior to Dec. 17, 2013.

Malone Funeral Home

  • Wayne Harvey Giese, 74, of Geneva, was a graduate of Geneva High School and was a three sport athlete.  He played football, basketball and ran track. He was an excellent runner and ran the Grandma's Marathon in 3.08 and was one of the founders of the Fox River Trail Runners Club. Wayne was an MP in the Army stationed in Germany.  He loved snowmobiling, family camping trips, and road races at Elkhart.  He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan.  Wayne’s parents were the former owners of Y’s Owl and he was a long time member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge.

  • Dorothy M Willing — Visitation and services will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
  • Gladys Thomson, 88, of St. Charles, met her husband Donald at a dance, and they made their home in Chicago, while she worked at Skidmore Owens & Merrill. After several years they relocated in Elmhurst, raising their three children. In 1975 she started to work for York High School as Financial Secretary, until her retirement in 1987. 
  • Dorothy G. (nee Wozniewski) Jezior 90, previously of St. Charles, passed away peacefully Dec. 19, at her home in Florence, KY. Before her retirement she worked as a greeter at Walmart. Prior to that she worked for School District #303 as an aide, where she was fondly known as "Grandma" to the students at Anderson School. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her family. 
  • Leo Valentine Linert, 86, was a generous and spirited man with a vivacious sense of humor that will always be remembered. He was a store manager for Sears for 42 years and was an ardent church choir member for decades. He raised his family in Naperville and Downers Grove, IL. He enjoyed retirement in his lake house at Pine Lake in LaPorte, IN and his condo in Naples, FL. He painted, pampered his Dahlias, fished, hunted mushrooms, boated, and warmed his family with his soups and sauces.
  • Zora Alexander Turnbaugh, 92, a long-time Geneva resident, married Dr. Roy C. Turnbaugh, later Geneva’s superintendent of schools from 1965-1986. He predeceased her in October, 2005. Zora spent most of her adult life as a homemaker devoted to her family, the comforts of home, entertaining, and cooking for friends. She had a deep and abiding love for classical music and was an omnivorous reader. Beginning in her mid-50s, she worked at the East Room of the Third Street shops in Geneva, later becoming a buyer. In the process, she gained a loyal following of customers who appreciated her impeccable fashion sense and integrity. Zora was known among family and friends for her generosity, her kindness, her quick wit, her gifts of food, her love of company, her spirited discussions of politics, and her devotion to her church.

  • James Joseph Yakich, 78, of Algonquin, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. He was born August 10, 1935 in Joliet, the son of John and Frances (nee Videtich) Yakich. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Triplett on October 19, 1963.
  • Norman Hansen Stolpestad, 69, of Batavia passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at his residence. He worked as a financial consultant with Merrill Lynch for 41 years.   • George Sheldon, 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at his residence in North Aurora. Beloved husband of the late Jayne Sheldon; loving father of Jan Sheldon of North Aurora and Jay (Kristina) Sheldon of Louisville, KY; and caring grandfather of Elise, Darby, and Giana Sheldon.
  • John E. Karafiat, 84, of North Aurora, was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Argonne National Lab in 1991 after 28 years as a printer in their graphic arts department. He liked golfing, fishing, and bowling. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
  • Florence “Pete” Liedberg, 83, of Batavia, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 at Batavia Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 11, 1930 in Wheaton, IL, the daughter of Clarence and Florence (nee Vogt) Mason. She was united in marriage to Andrew Liedberg on Aug. 7, 1954 in Batavia.
