Tri-Cities Death Notices: Community Mourns Loss of Outstanding Educators

Here is a brief description and links to funeral arrangements for loved ones from Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and the Fox Valley area. Posted June 18, 2013.

Malone Funeral Home


  • Bernice A. Lezon, 95, of Geneva, loved celebrating Christmas, especially decorating for the holiday. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Yurs Funeral Home 


  • Cindy S Fosse's visitation will be held form 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Yurs Funeral Home, St. Charles.
  • James C. Alsip, 85, of St. Charles, served in the US Army Air Corp for 14 years and was proud of his service during WWII.
  • Marlene Ann Garrison, 78, of St. Charles, died Wednesday June 12, 2013 at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva. She is survived by her husband, Rodger, three children and 10 grandchildren.
  • Suzanne M. (Matz) Niemiec, 50, of St. Charles, was an incredible wife, mother, sister and friend. She gave of herself each and every day and taught the meaning of family, love and courage.
  • Jacob L. Banbury, 25, of St. Charles, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013. at his home.
  • Jason M. Dwyer, 30, died in St. Charles. He enjoyed working on computers with his father, walks with his mother, lazy days with his wife and kids, hunting, fishing, camping, bonfires and beaches with his family and friends.

  • Shirley A. Yingst, 64, was an avid reader, quilter, stamper, and sometimes, painter. She was the librarian at Hope D. Wall School for special needs children in Aurora. While living in Park Forest more than 20 years ago, she served as a village trustee, president of the League of Women Voters, and was a branch manager at one of the local banks.
  • Norma Jean Bowers, 83, of Batavia was an outstanding educator who shared her gift and knowledge of music with students in Batavia Junior High School and every elementary school of Batavia for more than 30 years. She was a life member of the National Education Association, and is noted in the 1978-79 edition of Outstanding Educators in America.
  • Helen Jane Snyder, 71, of Batavia was a longtime and passionate educator in Batavia. She worked at Montessori in Batavia for 27 years and taught religious education at Blessed Sacrament in North Aurora for many years. Helen, who claimed to not be musically talented, managed to direct the Blessed Sacrament Choir to a wonderful melody.  In her spare time Helen’s secondary love was her seamstress talents.
  • Audrey L. Miller, 88, of Batavia is survived by two sons, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
  • Kathleen A. Kaphengst, 71, formerly of Lisle, died peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, June 10, 2013 at her residence in North Aurora. She enjoyed reading, gardening, Bunko, gambling, spending time with her family, and relaxing on the patio.
