Tri-Cities Death Notices: A World Class Pingpong Player, a Batavia Alderman, a Black Belt and More

Remembrances and links to the obituaries of Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles folks who passed away, for the week prior to July 30, 2013.

Malone Funeral Home


  • Mary C. Baswell, 98, of Batavia lived in Shanghai and Hong Kong in the years after World War II, and later travelled worldwide. She was an avid bridge player and was active in charitable and service organizations. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

  • Shirley Maureen (Jones) House, 77, of St. Charles was a world champion pingpong player for Wales, England. She immigrated to the United States in 1958 with her husband, David House, where she co-founded InterTrav Corporation and later settled in the Chicago area before moving to St. Charles in 1978. She was an accomplished tennis player in the United States Tennis Association, downhill skier, ballroom dancer and global trekker taking her to the far corners of the earth with family and friends, including the summit Mount Kilimanjaro and reaching Mount Everest’s Base Camp on more than one occasion.
  • Judith A. Miller, 73, of Geneva was a member of the Audobon Society and Bethlehem Lutheran Church St. Charles. She volunteered with Crisis Line in Aurora and the Butterfly House at Peck Farms. She formerly was employed for many years by Wilton in Woodridge.
  • Anthony Joseph Wieber, 68, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Loyola University Hospital. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Casmir Catholic Church in Lansing, MI.
  • Claus E. Kage Jr., 77, of St. Charles was employed by Lechner Inc. for 20 years before his retirement. He is survived by his wife Carol of 55 years, four children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
  • Roy M. Stohlquist, 83, of St. Charles was a member of the B.O.Y.S. Club. Before his retirement, he was employed by AT&T for 35 years. Roy loved to read and listen to classical music. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage.

  • Susan M. (nee Brazill) Tegeler, 41, of Geneva was united in marriage to D.J. Tegeler September 28, 1996 at Mooseheart.  Susan graduated from Columbia College in Chicago in 1996 and was a certified instructor of Tae Kwon Do holding a third degree black belt. 
  • Edward B. Millard Jr., 80, of St. Charles proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a hard worker and was a trusted general contractor in the area for many years.
  • Marcella “Marcie” Lazar, 90, of Aurora passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Batavia Rehabilitation.  She was born July 27, 1922 in Aurora, IL the daughter of George and Nellie (nee Marshall) Bennett. She was united in marriage to Daniel Lazar. 
  • Thomas L. Schmitz, 73, of Batavia had a fulfilled life full of public service.  While Tom’s children were young he served as a Boy Scouts troop leader, coached Batavia Boy’s Baseball and was treasurer of the Congregational Church.  Tom began his community service by serving on the Board of Zoning Appeals in Batavia. He then served on the Batavia School Board from 1987 to 1993.  Tom was then elected as Alderman in 1999 until 2011.  Tom was employed at Fermilab for 30 years.
  • Robert E. Lovellette Jr., of North Aurora, joined the Navy soon after high school and was stationed in Hawaii and the Philippines working with the crash crew. He worked for Campana in Batavia, then for Aurora Meat Packing Company in North Aurora. The last 16 years Bob worked as a school bus driver for Laidlaw, then First Student, and finally, Illinois Central where he serviced Batavia and West Chicago public schools. Bob was diagnosed with cancer and admitted to Hines Hospital in Maywood, where doctors were amazed at his attitude. Bob said, “You play with the hand God dealt you."  He played with courage, strength and, most of all, humor.
