Tri-Cities Death Notices: A Mystery Writer, a Playwright, a Music Teacher, a Funeral Home Director and a 'Swede'

From beloved teachers to writers and servicemen, here are the amazing stories and links to the obituaries of Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles folks who passed away this week.

  • Joann Wolf, 85, of West Chicago, was an expert crafter, artist and mystery writer. She loved to travel and see the world. She loved her family and in turn was loved by her many nephews, nieces, and many friends.
  • Faith E Batcheller, Services were held at 11 a.m. July 2 at Yurs Funeral Home St. Charles
  • Thomas Wolff Dickens, 75, of St. Charles, IL, and Fontana, WI, worked for more than 50 years in the printing paper industry, traveling throughout the world. He was highly regarded for his expertise and technical knowledge of coated paper printing. After retiring from Crown Vantage he established a successful consulting business.

  • Catherine “Kay” Peterson, 80, of Batavia and her husband Pike were co-owners of the Yurs-Peterson Funeral home in Batavia. She served as a dedicated funeral director from 1966 until her retirement in 1991.  She was also a dedicated mother who served as Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Cookie Chairman.
  • Ada Carol  Rollins, 76, of St. Charles, is survived by her five children, John Rollins Sr., Sherry (Mike) Newbolds, Donna (Mark) Wagner, Tammy Rollins, and Ann Rollins;  and her grandchildren, Matthew, David and Trace Newbolds.
  • Kathryn Hall, 83, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Batavia, where she volunteered as a teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School program.  For several years, she helped the Valley Sheltered Workshop and also worked as an operator for Illinois Bell during the 1950s.
  • Norman Ivar “Swede” Ekstrom, 98, of St. Charles proudly served his country with the United States Navy Seabees during WWII. He retired as an electrician with IBEW Local 461.
  • Valerie D. “Boyd” Sokol, 70, was proud to have worked most of her career as an educator. She taught at Downer’s Grove North, directing more than 65 plays and musicals. Most recently she taught acting, script writing and makeup for BRAVO Summer Theatre at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School in Oak Park. Valerie enjoyed writing many scripts for musical programs.  She has also written a one woman show, a memoir of her father and two novels. Her creative and positive approach to life is a legacy that will live on in the lives of those she touched.
  • Violet Veronica Baker, 97, of Elgin, worked as a copywriter for the Montgomery Ward Catalog. After her retirement, Violet worked for several years as a hostess at Paul’s Family Restaurant in Elgin. In her free time she enjoyed traveling, playing golf and tennis.
