Niche Chef Nicholas Spang Dies at 50

Spang was a chef at Niche restaurant, which is planning a grand reopening this spring with a new head chef and remodeled interior.

Nick Spang, a chef at Niche restaurant, died this Sunday, April 20, according to the restaurant's Facebook page.

"We regret to inform everyone that we lost a member of the Niche family this weekend," the restaurant posted. "Nick Spang one of our valued kitchen members lost his battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

Niche, which opened in 2006, won several accolades from regional and national publications, including 3 stars from Chicago Tribune critic Phil Vettel and two awards from Wine Spectator.

Niche was slated to reopen this spring under new chef Chris Ayukawa, who came from Sugar Toad at the Hotel Arista in Naperville, and a remodeled and renovated interior, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

The restaurant is planning to hold a memorial for Spang's friends and family from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 27.
