Why You Should Vote for Mike Abts for Geneva Township Highway Commissioner

Why you should vote for Mike Abts.

Yesterday, a voter asked me this question: “Why should I vote for you instead of your opponent?”

This was my reply:

Because of my extensive background in business and 38 years in public service, as stated in my first blog post and campaign literature, I believe I am highly qualified and capable of administrating the duties of the Geneva Township road District.

I also believe I have the particular mindset to guide the Geneva Township Road District in the future, which is to keep the position part time, get back to the basics of administrating snow removal, maintenance of roadways, and bridge inspections, etc.–also, to sell unused equipment such as the 15-year-old truck and end storage fees costing $20,000 a year, to move the office back to the township offices where there is staff to answer the phone during business hours, a free computer and internet to use. Just keep it simple while still doing the job at hand.

My opponent’s mindset is to grow this into a full-time position and raise the salary. He also has a proven mindset to be irresponsible with the taxpayers’ money by spending $5,100 on a computer, $1,500 on clothes for gifts, $100 on photographers, $1,200 for a luncheon, $100,000 to store an unused truck and more.

My opponent has now stated he would like to build bike paths. While I am not opposed to bike paths (I built miles of them as a Park Board Commissioner), I think that they should be left to Park Districts and Forest Preserve Districts. I would gladly partner with any agencies that would like to do so. I know that when applying for grants the more agencies involved, the better the chances. I do not think the Geneva Township Road District should be in the bike path business but rather leave it to the professionals and not a part-time road commissioner.

As a taxpayer, I believe monies should be spent responsibly with the taxpayer in mind and not wastefully as my opponent has shown, regardless of the dollar amount. As Highway Commissioner I will be absolutely committed to serving the public and protecting every dollar of yours as a taxpayer.

I would appreciate your vote on April 9.

Mike Abts
