'I voted' and I'm Proud of It

One woman's positive experience at the polls on Tuesday, March 20, 2012.

I voted on Tuesday, believing I'm not allowed to complain if I don't exercise that right. I spent a lot of time giggling at the polling place that evening. It felt to me as if a good time was being had by all.

Out here, there were few contests among the Democrats. I'm a transplant from the city, so historically I witnessed few contests among the Republicans. That said, I profess to being a "bleeding heart liberal" and am durned proud of my concern and compassion for others.

I walked into Rejoice! Lutheran Church in North Mill Creek and after verifying my identity, whispered to the nice people, "May I really take a Republican ballot?"

"Of course," a judge replied. "This is America; you may do whatever you want and vote however you wish!"

That said, they pointed me to the next table. One of the people there said, "When the flag waves, it's saying good-bye. Then and only then are you finished."  I liked that.

From there I got to play with the funny voting machine. (Am I the only one who has a good time with those machines?)

I voted FOR one candidate in one race and AGAINST several other candidates in other races ... Yup, this IS America.

After I finished, checked my list twice and submitted my ballot, I noticed the next posted step was to come back in November.  That put yet another smile on my face. It was quirky and cute ... I resemble comments like that, I think.

Walking back to the car, my husband asked what took me so long.

"Well, I voted for Kevin, but it took me a long time to remember who I hoped won't progress to the general election."

"Hmm," he replied.

"I only voted for Kevin. I don't want to mess with the primary outcomes otherwise. Didn't think it would really be fair or kind."

So, squarely back in my place (if only he'd suggested that on the way in!!!), we went on with our evening, heading 45 miles east to a board meeting for the Illinois Save Abandoned Babies Foundation. (I'll tell you more about that group soon because April is Save Abandoned Babies month in Illinois.)

This IS a great country, I'm getting old enough to say it.  Freedom is an extremely cool concept.

Live inspired!
