Postcards From Spring Break: New York City (Day One)

We visit some of my old stomping grounds.

This day was a trip down memory lane for dad (me) as much as it was a sight-seeing tour of the city, and a chance to take our first small bite of the Big Apple.

I lived in NYC for four-plus years, working at E.F. Hutton during the day and trying my hand at standup comedy at night. So today (Monday, March 26) we visited my old apartment building at 87 Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights.

We took a quick look at the Promenade, with its spectacular view of Manhatten, then had lunch at a cafe on Montague Street. Our hostess noticed my Illini cap, and it turns out she's from Evanston, IL. I asked if she's also an actress. No, she said, a dancer.

We took the subway back to Battery Park, where I used to work, and bummed around there. The wind was gale force.

The wait for Ellis Island was an hour in line plus an hour for the boat (spring break crowds, I'm guessing), so we just took a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, which at least got us a little closer look at the Statue of Liberty.

We walked through Wall Street, made a quick stop at a museum in the Alexander Hamilton Building, took a picture of the Wall Street bull (did not see any Occupy protesters), walked by the World Trade Center site, then took the Path train and a commuter back to my sister's house in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ.

Charles Kuralt Quote of the Day

"I don't think one should ever come to my stage of life and have to look back and say, Gosh. I wish I hadn't spent all those years doing that job I was never really interested in."
