Schaumburg Boomers fall 12-1 to London in team's first-ever matinee game

The Schaumburg Boomers fell 12-1 to the London Rippers in Frontier League action Tuesday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.

Schaumburg, which came into the game on a three-game winning streak, gave up 17 hits, including a grand slam as starter Andy Weeks suffered his first loss on the young season.

“We got down early and just didn’t really do a good job of fighting back,” Schaumburg manager Jamie Bennett said. “We’ve been down early a couple of times this season and did a good job of battling back, but didn’t do it this time.”

London took control of the game early, pulling out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single from Stephen Cardullo and an RBI single from Zach Larson. The Rippers then pushed their lead to 7-0 on a towering grand slam from first baseman Josh Broadman in the second inning.

Pitching was solid for the visiting Rippers, who improved their overall record to 3-7, as right-hander Yohan Gonzalez recorded six strikeouts and retired six of the first seven batters he faced. In all, he worked six innings, giving up only six hits and two walks.

“He pounded the zone and got a lot of strikes,” Bennett said. “We just had to make him work a little harder and not get so deep into the game, but we couldn’t do that.”

London added two more runs in the third and the fifth innings on a two-run double down the left-field line from Clifton Thomas and a bloop single to right field from David Christensen, respectively. Weeks lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up 11 runs on 13 hits, while striking out three batters and walking four.

“Weeks struggled to get started,” Bennett said. “Last time out he gave up an early lead, but battled back and gave us five without giving up a run, but today nothing went his way. He struggled with his command and it ended up hurting him.”

Schaumburg scored its lone run in the sixth on a Nick Kuroczko RBI single to left field. The Boomers fall to 6-4 overall.
