An Open Letter to Representative Randy Hultgren

Dear Congressman,

The next time you’re in town, do you think you can find time to talk to constituents who do not have healthcare insurance?  Maybe they can explain to you what it  feels like to have health problems without the means to pay a doctor or fill a prescription.  Or, maybe they’ll tell you what it’s like to choose between saving your life and losing your home.   Then, maybe you can explain to them why it is so important to you to deny them access to healthcare … even if it means shutting down our government.

Hopefully, when you talk to them, you’ll begin to understand why your position on the Affordable Care Act shows a complete disregard for the people whose health and well being depend on their new right to obtain health insurance.  While health insurance is something you take for granted,  there are 1000's of people in your district (who you are paid to represent) who have, until now, been denied.  After all, it’s not their fault America has the most expensive health care system in the world.

Congressman, have you looked at your Facebook page lately? It seems there are increasing numbers of voters in your district who are disturbed and ashamed of your use of overblown rhetoric  to frighten, confuse and prevent people from enrolling on the insurance exchanges ... in spite of the fact that they are legally required to do so.

This is a point in time when your constituents need level headed guidance to navigate  the implementation of one of the most important pieces of legislation in our generation. So instead of trying so hard to advance  your own extreme political agenda, why not demonstrate true, magnanimous leadership and work to solve the numerous flaws of the ACA? Help it achieve what it is intended to do: Make healthcare attainable for all Americans. Who doesn’t want that?
