The River Corridor Foundation of St Charles announced that it has purchased the sculpture “If I Could But Fly,” which will be installed in the spring by the city of St Charles along the Bob Leonard Walkway, the foundation announced Tuesday.

The sculpture will be on the walkway on the west side of the Fox River between Illinois and Prairie streets.

“The purchase of this almost 6-foot bronze sculpture ‘If I Could But Fly’ is the final major element of the Bob Leonard Walkway,” River Corridor Foundation of St Charles Chairman Larry Maholland said. “It culminates more than 10 years of collaboration among the River Corridor Foundation of St Charles, Downtown St. Charles Partnership Public Art Committee, city, Kane County and St. Charles Park District.

“The sculpture, along with the entire walkway, is a symbol of what can be accomplished through public and private cooperation and collaboration as well as memorializing Bob Leonard as a driving force behind this walkway,” he added.

The purchase was made possible through funds raised at the River Corridor Foundation of St Charles’ two annual fundraisers — the Bob Leonard 5K Run, Walk and Turtle Hurdle, and the Fall Concert at the Arcada Theatre.

The first is organized by the Leonard Family, the River Corridor Foundation of St Charles, and the St. Charles Noon Kiwanis Club. The Fall Concert is co-sponsored by the St. Charles Rotary Foundation and the River Corridor Foundation of St Charles.

This sculpture is also symbolic because Bob Leonard was a United Airline captain. Leonard was one of the original visionaries for development of the Fox River banks in downtown St Charles.
