John Barton Memorial Golf Outing — Sign Up Now!

  • Editor's note: An earlier version of this article listed the address as "Spruce." It's Juniper. :) Correct version is on there now.

Good friends, good food, good fun.

Good cause.

If you knew and loved John Barton — And really, who didn't? — there's a great way to honor his memory, contribute to a worthy charity and have pretty much a guaranteed great time by signing up for the first-ever John Barton Memorial Golf Outing.

Yes, the outing and dinner is July 19, but I can't emphasize how important it is to SIGN UP NOW. Legendary Geneva football Coach Jerry Auchstetter is organizing the shindig, and he's set an ambitious goal of raising $20,000 for the John Barton Memorial Fund.

Proceeds will benefit the “Jimmy V Foundation” for cancer research.

You can sign up for the golf or do just the dinner, which I'm guessing will be like a mini-reunion for a lot of high school classes in Geneva.

You actually have to use mail to send in your fee. (I know, what a concept.)

I'm going to try not to get too schmaltzy here, but if you're looking for a little inspiration, here are a few more articles. If you read them, you'll see the Valvano connection and, hopefully, get an inkling of how much fun the dinner and golf outing will be.

From Geneva School District 304

The friends and former colleagues of John Barton are planning a golf outing to benefit the “Jimmy V Foundation” for cancer research. John was a teacher and coach at Geneva Community High School for more than 30 years. John was inspired by Jim Valvano who coached basketball at North Carolina State University and died of cancer in 1993. John admired Jimmy V’s slogan, “Don’t give up…Don’t ever give up!” and lived by those words until his own battle with cancer ended in 2012.

The John Barton Memorial Golf Outing will donate funds to the Jimmy V Cancer Research Foundation. The outing is a great opportunity to connect with GHS alumni and past and present Geneva Community Unit School District #304 colleagues. John’s wife, Val Barton taught at Western Avenue School for many years, John’s sister Lil Sargent is a retired Western Avenue School teacher and John’ sister-in-law, Barb Freeman is a teacher at Western Avenue School.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, July 19th at 12:00 p.m. and see the attached flyer for all the details.
