2013 International Day of Peace Celebration in Geneva!

International Day of Peace is observed annually, on September 21, across the globe. This “Peace Day” provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create acts of peace on a shared date.

In past years, several Geneva organizations have celebrated the International Day of Peace in a variety of ways: with prayer, with guest speakers, with movies, with debates, and with panel discussions, offered to the community at large.

This year’s programming, presented by Northern Illinois Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), takes its cue from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s observation, that “Without justice, there can be no peace.”  Everyone is invited to come and learn how we can combine our talents to work together for justice in the Fox River Valley.

Currently, nine churches and nonprofits have agreed to meet to investigate how we can make a difference in the community. Through research and discussion these groups have found that there are a number of people in the Fox Valley who are wrestling with problems of foreclosure, homelessness, and access to healthcare. In addition, Kane County provides less support to health and human services than any comparable county in northern Illinois.

On Friday night, September 20, and Saturday, September 21, representatives from IAF will provide an Introduction to Community Organizing. It all begins with building relationships: within your congregations and within our community.

This two-day program is open to all and free of charge, at the United Methodist Church: 211 Hamilton, Geneva.  The program begins Friday night, 6:30-9 pm, with dinner and an overview. On Saturday, the program runs from 9 am until 5 pm, and includes a light breakfast as well as lunch.  A voluntary donation of $15 is requested.

Northern Illinois IAF is comprised of United Power for Action and Justice, Lake County United, and DuPage United – Fox Valley Initiative. This event is also co-sponsored by Northern Illinois United Methodist Conference.

Please spread the word and plan to join us to learn more about how people from throughout the Fox River Valley can join forces to work for justice in our community.
