FCA serves up VB sweep of Rotolo

Faith Christian Academy swept past Rotolo Middle School on Wednesday, knocking off the Bulldogs 25-7, 25-4 in eighth-grade volleyball action and 25-4, 25-18 in the seventh-grade nightcap in Batavia. The Falcons now sport a 12-2 record on the season heading into a doubleheader at Mooseheart on Thursday and a tournament in Elgin this weekend. Keep shining for Christ in performance, attitude and words, Falcons!

The Falcons' varsity squad (7-2) played a steady two sets in the opening match. Lauren Caprini and Anneliese Lockner delivered three passes to setter apiece in the first set while Lauren, Anna and Anneliese served up aces, Jessica Smith came up with four assists, and Anneliese pounded six kills. Lauren propeled FCA to a 12-0 set two lead with 13-for-13 serving. Gigi Crescenzo added 6-for-6 serving with an ace and two service winners and four passes to setter, Meagan Clemens went 3 for 3 serving with a service winner, and Nicki Smith rang up five assists.

Lauren earned the hustle award, and Anneliese, Anna Verhage and Meagan won the best attitude award.

The Falcons' seventh-grade team (5-0) won the first set quickly behind strong serving, good hustle and communication covering tips and free balls and a solid team effort. Liz Watson had three passes to setter while Liz, Rose McCormick and Gigi delivered a pair of aces apiece, Mackenzie VanDerSnick had three service winners, and Taylor "TNT" Tinnes capped the set one win with an ace. Jessica Kohlmeyer pushed FCA ahead 6-1 in the second set behind 6-for-6 serving and two aces. After building an 18-4 lead, we strayed in our focus and communication skills for awhile, allowing Rotolo to draw within 19-15 before regaining concentration and clinching the match behind an ace from Liz, a service winner from Rose and a pass to setter and kill from Gigi.

Taylor earned the hustle award for her fourth-grade firebrand performance, and Liz won the best attitude award.

Coach Weeks deserves a special hustle award for stepping in and flawlessly officiating both matches when the referee that Rotolo hired didn't show up. Thanks and fabulous work from our servant-minded coach!
