Falcons split volleyball doubleheader at Calvary Christian

Faith Christian Academy's JV squad used outstanding serving to knock off Calvary Christian 25-5, 25-8, while Faith's varsity showed good fight in the second set before losing 25-15, 25-22 in volleyball action Tuesday in Naperville.

The JV's serving was excellent throughout the lineup. Mackenzie VanDerSnick led the way, going 15 for 15 with most of her serves sailing to Calvary's back row and a few serves acting as line drives that found the floor. Jessica Kohlmeyer went 10 for 11, Taylor Tinnes was 6 for 8, Julia Turek went 3 for 3, Bethany Nielsen was 3 for 4, Paige Petty went 2 for 2, and Clara Demaray was 1 for 1. The Falcons' three fourth-grade players and rookie sixth-grader continue making good progress in their serving form!

Mackenzie earned the hustle award, and Clara and Bethany shared the best attitude award.

Faith's varsity team struggled in the first set but showed a lot of fight and hustle in the second set, leading most of the way until the host school scored five of the last six points to win the set and the match. The team looks forward to sharpening its all-around game and taking a second shot at Calvary later this season.

Gigi Crescenzo earned the hustle award behind a team-high four digs, six kills and six passes to setter. Anna Verhage and Corrin Schulze won the best attitude award, Anna for her determined play and solid floor game and serving and Corrin for 4-for-4 serving and strong setting and net play.

The JV now owns a 2-0 record and the varsity is 1-1 to give Faith a 3-1 overall season mark. The Falcons practice Wednesday and Thursday (first-year players are off Thursday) till 5:15 p.m. to prepare for a doubleheader at Cross Lutheran School on Monday in Yorkville. The varsity plays at 4:30, and the JV plays at 5:30.
