A Night Under the Stars

Imagine a science fair without the boring parts.

American Science and Surplus promises just that at their Science Night, scheduled for 6:00 to 10:00 pm on October 18th at their retail store in Geneva. The company does a large mail-order and on-line business in addition to their retail stores in Chicago, Milwaukee and Geneva, Ill., and has been a resource for science students and teachers for over 75 years.

Owner Pat Meyer calls Science Night a hands-on, fully interactive experience "without a foam-board presentation in sight." Instead, he says, the store will be filled with demonstrations that "whir, crackle, zap, bubble, fizz and occasionally go ka-boom," including a Wimshurst generator, Tesla coils and Galaxy Dough.

In addition, there will be microscopes pre-set with a range of slides and live specimens, amateur and professional level telescopes outside to view Saturn and the Moon, games and prizes. "We're committed to anyone,” says Meyer, “kids or fully grown kids, with an interest in science and technology. And we're committed to scientific fun."

This Science Night will also feature a free gift for any child who spends, or gets an adult to spend, $5.00.

"And because we have standards," Meyer says, "it's not a school night."
