Meet Chef Larry Zacher from 60 Men Who Cook

Meet some of the chefs who will be preparing awesome appetizers, sensational sides, mouth watering main dishes and delicious desserts at 60 Men Who Cook.

In just 30 days, 60 local community “celebrities” will be baking, cooking, grilling and sautéing (insert other culinary terms) dishes to please our palates.  The Third Annual 60 Men Who Cook takes place on May 6 at Prairie Event Center at Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 South Randall Road, St. Charles.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and samplings will begin at 6 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are $30 (2 for $50); $35 at the door, which includes samplings and voting. Of course, you need to vote for your favorite chef!

In the next couple of weeks, I will be spotlighting some of the fine chefs who have graciously offered to be a part of this event that is presented by Geneva Chamber of Commerce and supports Geneva History Center, Geneva Lions Club and Rotary Club of Geneva.

First Up—Larry Zacher.

Larry learned to cook from his mom and would much rather cook something at home than go out for a meal.  Growing up, he lived down the road from his grandparents who had a very large garden, so cooking fresh was the rule, not the exception. In fact, Larry recalls that his grandfather would pick the sweet corn only when the water was boiling on the stove. Can’t get much fresher that that!

Encouraged by his family and friends who promised to vote for him, he decided to sign on for "60 Men" this year. Volunteering for a group called “Feed the Souls,” which prepares meals with donated food and then delivers them to Lazarus House, has been extremely rewarding for Larry, so he sees "60 Men" as just another way to blend his love for cooking and passion for giving back to his community.

Chefs have four categories to choose from: appetizers, sides, main dishes and desserts. Larry considers desserts his specialty and still makes it a focal point of his family meals. Now, that’s a house I want to visit! He spends a great deal of time selecting his recipes, adapting and altering them to his personal tastes and ability. Anything that comes from Chef Zacher is prepared 100 percent from scratch.

When asked why people should vote for him, Larry replies “I am not a professional chef, but believe I have the passion of a professional.” Larry is actually a pilot for FedEx and “commutes” to Memphis for work. Lucky for us, he will be in town on May 6 preparing some delicious sweet dessert at 60 Men Who Cook.
