Historic Preservation, an $85 Million School Budget ... and the Cubs—5 Things You Should Know for Monday, Aug. 8

Today is an important day in Cubs baseball history. It's also a day for two important public discussions.

Genevans might want to be on the lookout for the possibility of severe weather this afternoon of Monday, Aug. 8.

It also could get a little stormy in a couple of public meetings. 

Here are five things going on today:

1. The WeatherChannel.com is reporting a high of 80 degrees with isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. 

2. Tree brush collection will take place this morning for residents on the East Side of Geneva. Please be aware that severe storms can delay pick-up times. For more information on the brush pickup program please click here.

3. The School District 304 Board of Education will discuss its tonight in an open hearing. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the , 1113 Peyton St. It's an open hearing, so if you want to throw in your 2 cents, this is your chance.

4. The city of Geneva's Committee of the Whole meets at 7 p.m. in . Tonight's agenda will include street closures for the Festival of the Vine, and a request from the Geneva Park District for the Fox Valley Folk Festival. Some resident might want to talk about the the provision on “no owner consent” for proposed historic landmark and district designation. The discussion will include opportunities for public comment and questions.

5. On this day in 1988, the Chicago Cubs played their first night game at Wrigley Field against the Philadelphia Phillies. Unfortunately, it was rained out after only three-and-a-half innings. 

The Cubs took the field the next night and played their first official night game against the New York Mets, beating them 6-4.
