Beth Bales: Chamber's First Citywide Garage Sale Is a Big Deal

Garage sales throughout Geneva, all on the same weekend? That's the plan of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, which is encouraging residents to clean out the closets, the basement and the attic, and participate in the first Citywide Garage Sale.

It’s spring—which means it’s also time for spring cleaning.

This year, get de-cluttered along with friends and neighbors, by participating in the  Geneva Chamber of Commerce’s first-ever Citywide Garage Sale on April 27 and 28. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

“We want to build community, build camaraderie and encourage people to explore Geneva,” said Chamber Communications Manager Laura Rush.

This is a win-win for residents. Participants get their addresses listed on a map that will be distributed to locations throughout town (plus posted on the chamber’s website), plus get a bright pink “Garage Sale” sign to post near their homes to advertise their sales. They also get the chance to list select items being offered during the sale.

And, it goes without saying, those who sell keep the profits.

At the same time, the Chamber of Commerce will do all the heavy lifting. The chamber is doing the advertising, printing and distributing of materials. And the Chamber has received special permission from city officials to post garage sale signs at key intersections.

Want to participate? To do so, and have your Geneva location listed on the map, people must send a registration form and payment—which offsets printing and other costs—to the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, 8 S. Third St., Geneva, 60134. The early-bird fee, good until April 15, is $20. After that date, the registration fee is $30. (To be listed on the map, registrations must be received by April 23.)

“Take a look at how much it costs to advertise a garage sale,” Rush pointed out.

Registration forms are available at www.genevachamber.com or can be picked up at the chamber office.

Have old toys the kids have outgrown? Clothing family members have outgrown? Is that exercise bike a catchall for clothes? Clean out, clear out—and make money, all at the same time!
