Dr. Nate: 6 Tips to Avoid Overindulgance During the Holidays

How do you maintain healthy eating habits during the family feast? How do you make sure that the turkey is the only one stuffed during the holiday season?

How do you maintain healthy eating habits during the family feast? How do you make sure that the turkey is the only one stuffed during the holiday season?  These guidelines can help you make healthy food choices and limit your intake of high-calorie foods during the holidays and other special occasions.

  1. Don’t arrive on an empty stomach. You might be tempted to skip lunch so you can overindulge on dessert—don’t do it. Have a bowl of healthy cereal, fresh fruit, vegetable sticks or a handful of nuts before you arrive.
  2. Offer to bring a healthy dish. This not only provides you with a healthy menu option, but your host will appreciate the help. I like to cook so I’ll usually bring a healthy dish. It might not be proper etiquette, but I’m also the one that eats most of it, too.
  3. Avoid excess alcohol and snacks. Save your calories for the main meal.  Alcohol provides many calories and virtually no nutrition. Also, strategically place yourself out of arm’s reach of tempting snack foods. I’m a big fan of red wine, so a glass or two isn’t a bad thing when balanced out with the other recommendations.
  4. Select small portions. Moderation is the key. Selecting small portions allows you to control your calorie intake, yet enjoy all of the different items offered.
  5. Eat slowly and enjoy the taste of your meal. Pace yourself and try to be the last person to finish the course. Remember, it usually takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the message that you are full. By eating slowly, you’ll be less likely to keep eating.
  6. Leave the table when you are done. If you stay at the table, you will be more likely to keep eating as the conversation continues. Offer to help with dishes, clear the table or take the conversation elsewhere.

Start the new year off right and have less regret by following these simple steps to success during the holidays.
