Cougars Finally Win One! Top Beloit 8-4 on Tuesday Night

5/10, Beloit 4, Cougars 8

Somebody found or ignited the Cougars offense. They would score eight runs and get 13 hits in their first in the series opener against the rival Beloit Snappers.

Tonight with the temps in the 80s they didn't need to open a can of turtle soup but they wanted some, getting all eight runs in the first five inning. Brian Fletcher had four hits and drove in four runs before he left due to injury. Geulin Beltre also had three hits and scored a run. Gerard Hall had two hits, and Murray Watts hit his first homer of the year.

Pitchingwise, it was a pretty good outing from the Cougars starter Sugar Ray Marimon. He would go five innings, giving up four hits and one run. He walked two and struck out seven. The one run he gave up was a third inning leadoff homerun to Daniel Santana. He would really only be in trouble twice in his outing. In the first inning with two outs he would give up a single to Nate Roberts. Roberts then stole second and third, Marimon got Michael Gonzalez looking to get out of trouble. In the second inning, Marimon gave up a leadoff single to Daniel Ortiz and a walk to Lance Ray. After that he would retire the side.

Offensivly, things got rolling from the first inning when the Cougars would get two runs off of Snappers starter Andrei Lobanov. Alex Llanos led off by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop. Gerard Hall then hit one back towards the mound and the pitcher tried to make the play and get Llanos at second but couldn't. One out later, Fletcher doubled to center to bring home both runners. Ryan Jenkins then lined one to center, Fletcher would be doubled off of second to end the inning.

Murray Watts hit a one out homer to center in the second. In the third inning, Hall led things off with a single to left. Ryan Stovall followed with a single to second. Fletcher brought home Hall with a single to right. Stovall would be out trying to get to third, while Fletcher made it to second on the throw. One out later, Lane Adams singled to right to bring home Fletcher.

With two outs in the fourth the Cougars would strike again. Hall doubled to left. Stovall would reach on a fielding error by the pitcher. Fletcher singled to left to bring home Hall. The Cougars final run of the game came in the fifth inning with one out. Watts would be hit by a pitch. Beltre singled to second. One out later, Llanos singled to left to bring home both runners.

The Cougars bullpen would have a little trouble in the sixth. Mitch Hodge came in and gave up a two out homer to Daniel Ortiz. After that he walked the bases loaded before being pulled from the game in favor of Jon Keck. Keck would walk the first man he faced to force in a run. After that Keck struck out Santana to get out of the inning.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Michael Gonzalez walked. Ortiz then singled to center. Ray would reach on a throwing error by Keck. On the play Gonzalez scored.

In the sixth inning with one out, Brian Fletcher doubled to left. While going to second he pulled up and limped into second. He had to be taken out of the game. Fletcher has had some leg muscle problems earlier in the year.
