Chairman’s Corner: America’s Birthday Party

I am so grateful for the privilege to serve you as Kane County Chairman. Having served so long in Springfield where so little gets done, now every day is an adventure.

On Wednesday night July 3rd, Dale Dobkins and the organizers of the Burlington, Illinois Fireworks Committee invited me to speak at their annual Fourth of July Celebration.

Dale says that five thousand people come to enjoy themselves and support America’s birthday party. My theme that night will be gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful gifts we all share.

Perhaps it’s no surprise to you, but I am consistently amazed by how many of this country’s blessings are taken for granted.

For example, the other night I came home a little late and, as I pulled into the driveway in Aurora, there was a group of neighbors helping my wife Sarah clear out some large tree limbs that had blown down in one of the storm bursts that have rolled through Kane County during the last couple of weeks.

You and I both recognize that these neighbors didn’t have to come out and lend a hand, but they did.

The storm had taken out the power in our neighborhood and we went to sleep with no electricity. However, when I woke up the next morning the power was back on. So, while Sarah and I slept, there were crews out restoring normalcy to all our lives.

This overnight effort is something we too often take for granted.

Now, think about the many gifts of freedom that were initiated on July 4, 1776 and the woven into the fabric of our everyday lives by the American Constitution ratified in 1783.

So please join me in celebrating our birthday on July 3rd in Burlington at 7:30 p.m.
