Chairman’s Corner: Progress at Animal Control!

Kane County Chairman Chris Lauzen shares his views with his constituents.

Saturday, May 4th, the Kane County Animal Control Shelter sponsored a rabies clinic. It was great fun! Despite the seriousness of the underlying disease, the atmosphere was festive and light.

Imagine your young child playing in your backyard when a neighbor’s dog suddenly appears and bites her. Before you are able to come to her aid, the dog runs away before it can be captured. Unfortunately, your child will now have to undergo a series of four excruciatingly painful rabies shots.

When pets are not properly vaccinated nor registered with Kane County Animal Control, an unreasonable burden is placed on your family in terms of unnecessary pain and treatment.

Kane County helps us protect all of our families by having a system in place for animal vaccinations…and it’s working!

In the past, managers of this wonderful function within county government thought our primary focus was loving our cats, dogs, and other animals. However, in order to take proper care of those pets, we need the funds to meet that objective.

That is why, in late January, we hired Billing Manager Rob Sauceda. In February, due to the Animal Control team’s effort, the $72,000 a month necessary to support that facility was collected. I remember a friend and board member observing, “Oh, that money would’ve come in anyway.”

Demonstrating we cannot take success for granted, in March we came up short by approximately $10,000. The good news for April is, the numbers are back on track, and, once again, we exceeded our goal.

So, Saturday’s clinic was just one part of the puzzle we’re piecing together to provide the financial resources to take care of all Kane County pets.

If your dog or cat has not been registered or vaccinated, would you please call Animal Control at 630-232-3814 to find out when the next clinic will take place.
