MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., July 31, 2013 Kohl’s Department Stores (NYSE: KSS) announced today that Jessica Streepy from Palatine is one of 10 national Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program winners receiving a total of $10,000 in scholarships for higher education. In addition to recognizing Jessica for outstanding efforts through volunteerism, Kohl’s will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of Jessica’s choice – One Day’s Wages. Through the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, Kohl's is encouraging promising youth to further their education at a time when college costs continue to rise and parents are relying heavily on federal and private student loans to fund higher education.*

When 12-year-old Jessica Streepy learned about the extreme poverty in Africa and the number of children dying from starvation and lack of clean water, she could not stand idly by. She quickly became an advocate for the charity One Day’s Wages and began to educate family, friends and others about extreme global poverty, urging them to take action. To date, Jessica has raised more than $20,000 for One Day’s Wages.  Determined to do even more, Jessica started “B-U-Barrettes,” a business dedicated to creating homemade hair and hat clips and scarves, with profits going to One Day’s Wages to help alleviate extreme global poverty. Jessica sells her homemade creations at home parties, craft shows and at a local boutique with a portion of the proceeds going to One Day’s Wages. In the past two years, Jessica has raised more than $20,000 for One Day’s Wages to aid in improving conditions in Africa and, ultimately, saving children’s lives.

In 2013, Kohl’s celebrates its 13th year of rewarding young volunteers. Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 19,000 kids, including the 2013 winners, with more than $3.9 million in scholarships and prizes. This year, Kohl’s recognized more than 2,300 young volunteers with more than $400,000 in scholarships and prizes.
