Founding member of the LivingWell Board of Directors, Joanne Hansen, spoke poignantly about her personal journey with cancer 27 years ago, and the fulfillment of her vision to develop a local community resource for those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

“LivingWell offers a wide range of innovative programs for people of all ages and has grown to the point where we need to expand,” Hansen said. “We’re proud to break ground on a new, larger center that will meet the increased need and further fulfill the vision.”

LivingWell Board Chairman Terry Murphy said LivingWell’s has grown by more than 25 percent every year, and that the new, purpose-built facility, which is nearly three times the size of the existing space, will allow LivingWell to better facilitate the more than 50 programs and services offered free of charge to cancer survivors and their families.

The new $5 million building will feature a comfortable reception and  lobby area with a relaxing water feature, a studio for mind body fitness activities, a cooking demonstration kitchen, a multipurpose room for educational programs, a clinical counseling area for adults, families and children as well as small and large group counseling rooms, an enlarged health and cancer resource library, a boutique for hair and make-up demonstrations for cancer patients, outdoor gardens for children, teenagers and adults, an art therapy room, conference rooms and administrative offices.

The new building is expected to be completed in the early part of 2012.  The architects are Kluber, Inc. of Batavia and the builders are Shales McNutt of Elgin.
