Layoffs Loom for Walgreens, Best Buy, Sun-Times Media, Kmart

Crain's Chicago Business is reporting that nearly 1,200 jobs could be lost at the prominent companies.

Nine companies are reportedly preparing for nearly 1,200 layoffs throughout Illinois, including Walgreen's, Kmart and Sun-Times Media, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

Deerfield-based Walgreens will reportedly lay off 65 warehouse workers in west suburban Berkeley while Kmart, part of Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp., plans to lay off 98 employees when it closes a Naperville store in the spring, reported Crain's.

Sun-Times Media, publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times and suburban papers including the Naperville Sun, The Beacon-News in Aurora and Courier-News in Elgin, warns that 274 jobs in Glenview, Tinley Park and Aurora could be eliminated due to consolidation.

The Best Buy Co. closing will be near the Old Orchard shopping plaza. But the company closed six Chicago-area stores last year and 50 nationwide.

Last year, the struggling electronics big-box chain shuttered six stores in metro Chicago as part of a larger plan to close 50 big stores nationwide. Best Buy is looking to open 100 smaller “mobile” stores, including 10 in the Chicago suburbs, Crain's reports.
