Kane County Chronicle Owners Buy Gatehouse Weeklies

Shaw Media announces Monday that it has purchased Gatehouse publications, including The Geneva Republican, The Batavia Republican and The St. Charles Republican.

Shaw Media—owner of the local Kane County Chronicle and other dailies—announced Monday (Oct. 1) that it has acquired 22 weekly newspapers from Gatehouse Media, including three Tri-Cities papers: The Geneva Republican, The Batavia Republican and The St. Charles Republican.

It will be of more than passing interest to newspaper readers what happens from here.

The purchase changes the landscape for local news in the Tri-Cities and opens up opportunities for the family-owned company to spread its wings in DuPage, McHenry, Will and Cook counties. According to an article in the Kane County Chronicle, the purchased Gatehouse publications were under the Suburban Life publications umbrella and include the Elmhurst Press, Wheaton Leader, Downers Grove Reporter and Berwyn Life, as well as the website mysuburbanlife.com.

Chronicle Publisher J. Tom Shaw will serve as publisher of The Republicans and all of the Suburban Life publications, the article said.

Many of the Suburban Life Publications titles were purchased in the late 1990s or early 2000s from family-owned publishers. The article released Monday afternoon celebrates the publications' return "to their family-owned roots."
