Dominick's Closing Could Mean 6,600 Jobs Lost

The 68 stores, including one in Geneva, are not expected to close Dec. 28.

If you're out of work and looking for a job in the grocery industry, you could have as many 6,600 new competitors by next month.

According to an article in Crain's Chicago Business, there could be that many people put out of work when the 68 Dominick's stores close up.

The Chicago Sun-Times previously reported that 72 Dominick's grocery stores — including the one in Geneva — would be closed by early 2014.

Now Crain's is saying four stores were sold to Jewel, but the remaining 68 could be shut down on Dec. 28. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

The Dominick's chain, purchased by California-based Safeway in 1998, was founded in Chicago in 1918.

The Geneva Dominick's is located at 2000 South Randall Road.
