Bites Nearby: Michaelangelo's Deli is Not to Be Missed

Creating family style meals since 1960, Michaelangelo's is an Italian sandwich shop and deli that's not to be missed in Geneva.

With family recipe's behind the success of Michaelangelo's deli counter and catering business, the domestic and imported meats and cheeses showcased in the coolers at the front of the restaurant are half of what makes the Italian deli sandwich so coveted; their delicious freshly baked bread covers the other half.

Most everything in the deli case is available by the pound to take home, but Michaelangelo's flair for stacking a great sandwich makes it hard not to enjoy it in their house.

Decor

This is a no-fuss deli when it comes to the ambiance. Wooden floors and Tuscan-colored walls are seen throughout the space. There are a few low- and high-top tables for seating. Orders are taken via counter and paid for at the other end of the line. (And trust us, there's usually a line).

Michaelangelo's outdoor seating is prime real estate for people-watching in downtown Geneva, and a relaxing space to enjoy your meal.

Sandwiches

In true Italian deli fashion, the cold-cut sandwiches feature fresh bread, meat, and cheese. All submarine sandwiches include lettuce, tomato, a choice of cheese, mayonnaise, and Italian dressing. Bread choices are: French, white, wheat, light rye, dark rye, and a Kaiser or onion roll.

The classic Italian Submarine is the best way to experience everything in the meat case on fresh and chewy bread. Sold in 6-inch ($4.25), or 12-inch ($8.30) loaves, it's piled high with Mortadella, Capicola, Genoa Salami and Provolone cheese. Grilled Paninis take extra time to allow for grilling, but are worth the wait.

A house specialty is the MichaelAnglo Panini, made with Prosciutto ham, fresh mozzarella cheese, basil, tomato, and a salt and pepper dressing; the sandwich is then grilled on a Panini press and served hot. Other hot sandwiches include a classic Chicago-style Italian beef, which also comes in 6-inch ($4.50), or 12-inch ($8.80), varieties.

Chips and a drink are available with any sandwich or Panini for an extra $1.75.

Salads

Michaelangelo's fresh deli salads are sold by the half or whole pound, and are a tasty addition to your order. The pasta salad ($4.99/lb) is made with tri-color rotini pasta tossed in a light Italian dressing with cheese, artichoke hearts, and other fresh vegetables. Fresh basil and mozzarella salad ($7.99/lb), is somewhat pricey, but deserves a taste, and is a sharable portion.

Service

Service is efficient, but there is sometimes a backup at the order counter. It's a small price to pay for the staff to slice each meat and cheese to order. The fresh taste is worth the effort.
